English punctuation and grammar are not so straightforward. A comma can be replaced by a hyphen, which can sometimes be replaced by a semi-colon. Consider for example the sentence: "It took me three hours yesterday to complete that assignment - I am not even sure if it is done correctly." It is correct to replace the hyphen by a period to split it into two sentences. It is also correct to replace the hyphen by a semi-colon. Further, you can replace the hyphen by the conjunction "and", or "still" preceded by a comma, so that the two clauses of the sentence are joined together to form a compound or a complex sentence respectively. Therefore, this simple example illustrates how many different ways there are to report the same idea with a different choice of expression using different punctuation symbols and figures of speech. This is the reason why punctuation and grammar can seem very difficult or formidable when writing a paper, more so for a person with English as a Second Language.© BrainMass Inc. brainmass.com December 24, 2021, 7:15 pm ad1c9bdddf>
