Introduction

Organizations are built by the aggregation of people for some common goals, and in order to achieve these goals, people should behave in a manner, specified by organizational rules, regulations, policies and other methods. Organizations try to achieve this through the process of influencing the behavior of their members. Power and politics are important and necessary part of an organization. It is essential because it is like a hub in a bicycle wheel that runs organizational machinery. Managers without power bases are merely figure-heads and cannot function effectively in their roles. In this process, the management and the leader of the organization also has an important place.

Power and Politics

In the social phenomenon, the power is a task of ties of reciprocal dependence. In the words of Schermerhorn et al. Power can be defined, as, the capacity of one party to influence the other parties and to act as first party desires. Power can influence the behavior through compliance, identification and internationalization (Schermerhorn, Hunt & Osborn, 2006, pg. 2, ch. 12). In order to coordinate the activities of the organizations such as effective performance, accomplish the pre-establish goals and tasks, etc. Power is necessary.

In the words of Tushman, politics can be defined as the constitution and procedure of the application of power, to affect the various parameters such as definitions of goals, directions, etc. It is the behavior of self serving that outside the normal legitimate system of influences, may become illegitimate (Tushman, 1977, pg. 217).
