The unions and employers should take some steps to successfully administer a collective agreement. The first steps are taken when the agreement is formed. The labor union should properly represent the employees and the representatives should be acceptable to most employees. Next, during the agreement formation each party's position should be detailed clearly and properly. Each concern should be reflected in the collective agreement. For example, the exact remuneration to be paid to different grades of employees and the productivity standards that the employees are required to comply with should be unambiguously written. Each issue such as pay, benefits, time off and pensions should be clearly mentioned.
