This case was based on the nonstatutory labor exemption under the U.S. antitrust laws, which holds that labor agreements which are decided upon through the efforts of collective bargaining are exempt from antitrust laws. The main issue in this case was whether or not the exemption from the antitrust laws due to the collective bargaining activities ceases when management signs an official labor agreement with the signed parties (i.e. workers), or if the collective bargaining exemption extends for an indefinite period of time.
