Mayo Clinic Operations

"No one is big enough to be independent of others," Said Charles. H. Mayo the founder of Mayo Clinic (Mayo Clinic, 2010). Medicine has proven to be a complex department that requires a dedicated and qualified team of specialists, physicians, medical professionals, and scientists collaborating to provide the best medical attention. Mayo Clinic history is about being at the right time at the right palace. It was a moment where the scientific discovery made possible the creation of the modern medicine. It is essentially a story of an extraordinary family of Dr. William Worrall Mayo and his two sons, Dr. Charles H. Mayo and Dr. William J. Mayo. They built one great institution, the Mayo Clinic. As their expertise continued to develop, their fame spread globally and they started inviting more partners who could provide services and complement their surgical practice. They developed one of the global incorporated practices of medicine. They were determined, dedicated and had the will to face harsh and hostile environments. It is a story of sharing, discovery, selflessness, collaboration, and generosity. In order to analyze Mayo Clinic, we have to look at its goals, achievements, failures and recommendations. Whether or not they have lived up to their dreams and goals and whether there are needs that still need to be addressed is of paramount issue.

Innovation in healthcare has led the Mayo Clinic to make a shift and modify its services to attract more patients. The strategy was revolutionary, as the company became the first and largest integrated, not-for-profit group practice in the world (Mayo Clinic, 2010). The processes of how the clinic treats its patients have changed. Instead of having departments work independently, doctors from every specialty work together to care for patients with the objective and philosophy that the needs of the patient come first. The founders of the clinic understood that medicine has become so complex that it requires a team of specialists, physicians, scientists, and medical professionals all working together to provide the absolutely best medical care available, and diagnose each patient, recommending the best possible courses of treatment. The services have changed in that examinations are unhurried and each doctor listens attentively to the patient he or she is treating. In addition, evaluations are comprehensive with timely, efficient assessment and treatment, with availability of the most advanced, innovative diagnostic and therapeutic technologies and techniques. In essence, one would read about such an organization and feel naturally drawn to receiving healthcare services there rather than anywhere else because of the peace of mind and security that the clinic offers. Innovation's impact on healthcare has led to the creation of Mayo Clinic, an organization that chooses to interact with the challenges of technology and demanding services, and finds a competitive advantage that successfully attracts new customers of every market.

Through research, they have come up with a new genetic test that is meant to help the doctors identify patients who may be having side effects to drugs used to treat depression. A report by Mayo Clinic reveals that depression affects 18 million adults. Thus, their introduction to the drugs will be of great benefit to the community. The report also shows that Mayo Clinic has offered the proven analytical technologies to over 5,000 health care institutions globally. Though Mayo Clinic believes that American health needs an urgent reform to ensure quality in patient's care, it has failed.
