The Tuskegee Experiment was probably the most famous and infamous clinical research study in the United States History. It took place between 1932 and 1972 and was conducted by the United States Public Health Service. The purpose of the study was to track the natural history of the disease syphilis in a group of 600 African American men who were underprivileged farmers from Macon County, Alabama. These individuals were under the impression that they were receiving subsidized government health care in the form of free visits meals, and free burial insurance. In reality, however, they were not being treated at all, nor where they told of their diagnosis, and rather monitored. They were told that had "bad blood" and were being treated appropriately.
