Business ethics are often seen as being at odds with the wishes of the consumer. A major component in this branch of ethics, especially in corporate business, is the mandate to acquire and maintain an increasing profit. The goal of the consumer, however, is to get as much value in the goods or services purchased for the least cost.
Consumer value can obviously be measured in price, but it can also be measured in conveniences, such as fast food restaurants and strategically located small stores, or, opportunities for income, such as lottery ticket sales, or affiliate income. However, in these days of identity theft and privacy invasion, many consumers are not willing to trade conveniences or income opportunities for lower prices.
On the Internet, the price of access is not so easily determined by the consumer. Like the earliest days of television, when costs were paid for by the advertisers, the same is true with internet providers. But additional payment is now in the collection of other personally identifiable information about the consumer. This information includes what sites they visit, what advertising links they click, and perhaps even what discussion groups or social media they contribute their thoughts or personal information - and perhaps even what that information includes.
The Google privacy policy has been online since 1999, and the changes have been documented on the website https://policies.google.com/privacy/archive. In it, these statements were made in the first statement dated June 9, 1999:
