Non-Verbal Communication

Following the information from this week's non-verbal course topic, I became a bit more aware of what was being communicated non-verbally, either by myself or by others around me, as part of effective communication both as a speaker and a listener. Non-verbal communication is made up of visual, tactile, vocal & time/space/image elements (Wertheim 2008). For example, what we see as body language, as facial expressions, as eye movements, postures and gestures can fall into the visual elements. The use of touch like a handshake or a pat falls under the tactile heading, the intonation or how one speaks or how certain words are spoken can elicit meaning and expressions and one's actions of arriving in time for a meeting (or the reverse), people giving us respectful space when talking, and the way we dress and present ourselves all have impact in non-verbal communication (Wertheim 2008).

I had a meeting with a group at work this week. I arrived 5 minutes prior but there was someone else earlier than me. She was sitting in the meeting room, waiting for everyone to arrive. When I entered, she gave me a respectful nod and her face was welcoming and peaceful. She was professionally dressed and was sitting with a good posture.
