Behaviors that indicate the existence of conflict among employees

Conflict is defined by Robbins and Coulter (2004) as perceived incompatible differences that result in interference or opposition. This definition indicates that it arises as a result of unreconciled differences between or among parties involved. Not all conflicts however are disadvantageous. There are those that contribute to the attainment of organizational goals and objectives. These are called functional conflicts. On the other hand, some conflicts (the dysfunctional conflicts) adversely affect the organization's chance to attain its targets.

A good manager must be alert of the signs or indicators of conflict or symptoms that conflicts are about to arise. Being alert of signs is being pro-active. This would result to lesser occurrence of conflict or lesser chance that they aggravate. Being alert would also mean preparing the organization so that when such problems arise, there are ready solutions.

The following are some of the indicators or manifestations of conflict (according to parties involved) particularly among members of an organization:

1. Between line and staff in general (Certo, 1994).
a) The staff personnel (who must provide support services) do not give sound advice to people in the line or to the managers themselves. Sometimes memorandum from the top are not disseminated on time or if ever disseminated, these are done selectively.
b) Either the line or staff steals credit for success.
