Types of Process Variation:

Today, in an organization, there exist mainly two types of process variations; such as 'Common Cause Variation' and 'Special Cause Variation'. Common Cause Variation takes place accidentally and is progressed into a business system. It occurs consistently due to the difference in the circumstances of the business process in which the business exists or operates. On the other side; Special Cause Variation mainly moves into the business system from the outside environment. It is not a routine variation that may produce significant variance in enviable and unenviable manner (Joint Commission Resources, 2002).

Ways to identify & deal with Variations:

By using the various tools & techniques such as run charts/ control charts, business can easily identify common causes of variation. While, on the other side; the firms use statistical process control to identify the special causes of variation in a process, because it is an effective way that helps in keying out and copes up with this type of process variation.

Both kinds of variations can be dealt with the help of effective actions. Common cause variation can be dealt efficiently by making effective changes in the organizational process and by identifying the differences between standard and actual performance measures. On the other hand, Special cause variation can be handled by the identification and examination of the special cause. If the cause is positive, this is used into the process or if it is negative, it is prohibited.
