The balanced scorecard approach (BSC) is a management tool that provides focus on four critical areas -- financial, internal business processes, customer, and learning and growth. Management sets metrics in each area with appropriate targets and initiatives -- ways to reach the targets. Through the combined effort of all personnel, management is able to improve performance. It would be useful for all areas, including IS performance. By using it with IS, management can analyze the necessary areas in each of the four quadrants and can then determine how to improve performance in each area based solely on IS factors.
