Mutation can affect diversity with respect to the effect on alleles because a mutation is actually a permanent, heritable change in the nucleotide sequence of a DNA on the chromosome. (1) Alleles are found on the chromosomes so mutation will change the alleles on the chromosomes, which will lead to genetic diversity. A mutation is actually a change in one or two alleles of a single gene. There are several types of mutation. Point mutation is when one base is deleted on the DNA that can cause a phenotypic change in the gene. They can occur spontaneously and randomly. Mutation creates a change in the DNA that can affect the phenotypic diversity of the genes expressing the traits. For example, a gene can have alleles that encode purple flower.
