First of all, it's important to understand what meiosis is and what its purpose is. Meiosis is the division of cells to create Gametes which are later used for reproduction. Sperm cells and ovules (egg cells) are gametes. Gametes have only one set of genetic information in them (haploid), as opposed to the two sets that most of our normal cells have (diploid).

There are 9 phases you should know about in Meiosis:

INTERPHASE: during interphase (before meiosis) the DNA undergoes replication making an exact copy of itself.

PROPHASE I: The DNA coils up and compacts itself into chromosomes (funny-looking lanky 'X' shaped things). Chromosomes are made up of two sister chromatids linked together by a cetromere.
