HISTORY: (Deepwater Horizon - BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill)
The oil-drilling rig Deepwater Horizon on April 20, 2010, which was operating in the Macondo Prospect in the Gulf of Mexico experienced an explosion which resulted in the death of 11 crew members. This spill is the largest in the world, accounts for approximately 4.9 billion barrels of oil being leaked out from the Macondo well. The leakage continued for 87 days and finally on July 15, 2010 it was capped.

Planning of restoration activities started on October 2010 once the damage and injury to natural resources was confirmed.
It will take several years for planning and implementation of restoration activities. Restoration will require integration and analysis of multiple types of information which include measures and comparisons of the ecological, biological, geophysical, chemical, and oceanographic conditions in the Gulf, both pre- and post-spill, and/or modeling of conditions where pre- and/or post-spill information is not available.
In addition to clean-up of the spilled oil that might benefit the marine mammals, restoration activities would also include making an estimate of the stock of marine mammals and also restoration efforts should try to minimize human-related risk factors in the Gulf, such as noise from seismic surveys, vessel traffic, sonar and military activities; fishery interactions; disturbance from tourism and illegal feeding; harmful algal blooms and anoxic zones.
