Diffusion is the movement of substances from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration. Osmosis is basically the diffusion of water. A fluid will move across a membrane from the side which contains less dissolved substances (such as salt, for example) to the side with more dissolved substances. So, the fluid will try to equalize the concentration of solution on each side of the membrane.
