    Claim to fame: yes, he was deaf but more importantly for composers, he was the first famous composer to make a living without relying on patronage for a steady income. This marked a huge change in the way composers thought of their music. They were free to compose what they liked instead of what their patron wanted. The only catch was...they now had to find someone to buy their compositions.
