Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor â?" 1st movement - He used a 4 note theme and created an entire work. Can you think of a modern day music composer who has become famous due to some three-four note themes?

I'm not sure if this is quite what you are looking for, but John Williams is hugely famous for his notable themes from film scores. Examples include:

    Star Wars
    Jaws Theme
    E.T.
    Hedwig's Theme from Harry Potter
    Indiana Jones theme

The motifs range from 3 to about 6 or 7 notes, depending on the piece and they are played throughout the entire piece. I wouldn't rank Williams with Beethoven in terms of skill, but he's certainly made a name for himself in our time.
