This is a great topic for a "long winded" discussion. Before I give you my picks and reasons, let me offer other alternatives:
1. If you are only looking for setting and/or type of musical as the "theme" there are tons of western musicals with basically parallel themes. Oklahoma, Paint Your Wagon, Annie Get Your Gun, Seven Brides... etc.
2. If story line is all you need look more toward My Fair Lady et al.
3. Love Stories: West Side Story, Miss Saigon, Phantom, ...etc.
4. Other suggestions would include: Religious (Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell), Comedies ( A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Into the Woods, Hello Dolly) The possibilities and connections are endless!
The direction I am taking deals more with the perspective of the shows. I have chosen the following musicals: Fiddler on the Roof, Les Misérables, and The Sound of Music.
