ANOVA test is useful when the study involves 3 or more levels of a single independent variable. The null hypothesis for ANOVA will be that the mean is the same for all groups. The alternative hypothesis will be the average is not the same for all groups. The null hypothesis is rejected if we can conclude that the mean of the dependent variable is not the same for all groups. With ANOVA, if we reject the null hypothesis we understand that at least two groups are different from each other. So, ANOVA is useful if there is hope of showing that there is a difference between group means.
