You are all descended either from immigrants to America or from Native Americans. All of us, therefore, have in our background a culture other than the one that governs most of our present social life.
Describe the similarities and differences between norms of the author's cultural background and those of the dominant American culture. Secondly it will describe how these similarities and differences affect the author's life. How has author's cultural background contributed to the mix that is the dominant American culture, and lastly how the author has developed a new culture as an adult and the sources of this personal development?

My cultural background included the ScotsIrish, the English, and the Cherokee. My mother is part English, part Cherokee and my father is Scots Irish. Both have had an impact on the culture of the American landscape. The English, of course, were among the earliest settlers, settling near where my mother's father's family was in North Carolina. Many of the traditions and beliefs we hold in the dominant culture of white Europeans come from the English settlers. Just as important, the Scots Irish and Irish also brought much of the traditions of the dominant culture to this country. They also formed the backbone of the working class in the country.
