First of all, you might align and summarize some functionalist theories about race relations and racism in general. As you look at this deep issue, you might certainly detect some ironies or paradoxes among functionalist theory, too.

For example, this ideology might see racial and ethnic inequities as both desirable and detrimental for society. On one hand, research seems to shows that this theory might deem racism in the respect that it is productive or necessary for functioning in society. In other words, they seem to think that it ensures that the most qualified people will get the most important jobs in a society.

On the other hand, you might also show that functionalists do not just see it in terms of function or necessity 100%; instead, they contend that "ethnic inequality has the potential to cause serious disruption of society" ...
