Theory matters on a personal level because it investigates social causes and the consequences of those issues and problems related to racial identity, gender identity, family conflict, deviant behaviour, aging, and religious faith, for example.

On a societal level, theory matters because it examines and seeks to explain matters pertaining to crime and law, poverty and wealth, prejudice and discrimination, schools and education, business behaviour, community dynamics, and social movements and why certain phenomena occur.
