I understand that terms like this could be hard to get a grip of especially since it appears to be a 'process' - something that you must do. First, let us talk about what a reality test is. In the social sciences, a reality test is the process of testing ideas, projects, concepts and theories in the real world. Often as in the case of scientists and academics, they formulate their ideas in the confines of their classrooms, laboratories, libraries and research facilities. There are 2 kinds of 'life/social systems' as it is - open and closed. The closed system is one where all the variables are accounted for, therefore everything can be explained as the scientist has full control. Consider a chemist working in the confines of his laboratory on a controlled experiment - he knows the chemicals he is using, he is testing for effect and determined to get the results.
