One of the biggest changes of social values in the past 50 years was the Civil Rights Movement which has a great effect on the educational system of our country. A couple of years earlier in 1954, the court ruling of Brown vs. Board of Education decided that separate was no longer equal when it came to educational opportunities for African Americans. This lead throughout the next decade more activists joining the Civil Rights Movement to fight for equal rights for the disabled, gays, senior citizens, and women. Schools began adapting strict multiculturalism policies which allowed equal access to education for all. Discrimination was no longer allowed in schools, and children were taught to appreciate and respect each other and their cultural differences.
