The name Shinto emerged with Buddhism and can be traced from China to Japan. The Japanese name for Buddhism, "Butsu-do" produced the name Shinto. The Japanese religion was called "shen-duo" (meaning the way of the gods). In Japanese, "shen-duo" was pronounced shin-to (Origins of Shinto). Shinto as a religion reflects the Japanese worship of the spirits who were believed to inhabit the natural world.
