The three levels of prevention are a major component of the healthcare system and influences the structure of various societal and governmental programs and services.

Primary prevention relates to risk reduction. It entails working with at-risk individuals (e.g. teens who engage in unprotected sexual intercourse) who do not yet have any ailments or diseases. Primary prevention programs, such as smoking cessation classes, work to alter risky behavior and limit the exposure to potential diseases such as STDs, lung cancer, etc. Generally, primary prevention targets specific causes and risk factors for specific diseases and also aims to promote healthy behaviors.

Secondary prevention entails working to reduce complications and recurrence in individuals already afflicted with disease. For example, women with early stage breast cancer may get a mammogram in order to detect the status of cancer in order to provide treatment for it before it has a chance to metastasize (spread) or in some cases, to ...
