According to a 2015 study in Frontiers (Herman & Roberto, 2015), addiction, which is the "consumption of chemical substances that produce transient feelings of euphoria or pleasure and the development of dependence on those substances by a subset of individuals" is a phenomenon that has beset human civilization ever since humanity has come across substances that produce those effects and thus, dependence. Herman & Roberto (2015) allege that while there exists a body of knowledge that document the way drugs alter the brain leading to an addicted state, neurophysiological processes involved still require clarification. Be that as it may, they relate that the chronic relapsing disorder of drug addiction has 3 stages - preoccupation/anticipation, binge/intoxication, and withdrawal/negative effect.
