I am looking for a simple diagnosis, the rationale for that diagnosis, and a preliminary treatment plan for the following scenario:
Shawna is a 54-year-old African-American female who is married with three children, all of whom are grown and living on their own. Her last child moved out four years ago. She was a stay-at-home mother, a role that she really enjoyed. In the last three years Shawna has had the following problems. She states she feels "lost and doesn't know what to do with herself now that she has no children to take care of". She has gained 42 pounds in the last two years due to snacking all day. She states that she has trouble sleeping at night, so she takes a nap in the afternoon which she never did previously. She reports that her husband has suggested that she go to work but Shawna says she has never worked and has no idea what kind of a job she would like to do or even if she could find one. Prior to her last child moving out Shawna was happy with her life. She loves her husband and they have been married for 34 years. She says she wants to feel better but just doesn't know what to do.
