The history of schizophrenia is limited in contrast to other medical conditions as the term was only coined in 1911 by a Swiss psychiatrist. The psychiatrist responsible for coining this term as well as other medical researchers emphasized how schizophrenia is characterized by mental confusion, fragmented thinking and other mental health challenges. The term was not supposed to imply that people with schizophrenia possessed split personalities, but the common notion that this is the case still exists today. Unfortunately, there has not been a concise and credible diagnostic tool for schizophrenia because of the complexities associated with its etiology, neuropathology, and pathophysiology, which has caused a specific diagnostic test for the mental illness to remain elusive.
