The goal of this paper is to understand how the brain and memory processes are intertwined. Read all of the reading resources listed for this week on short-term and long-term memory, and how the various types of memory tie in with the neural mechanisms in the brain. For further readings access the Memory and Brain Mechanisms Paper Suggested Resources. Discuss how memories are formed and maintained in the brain through the actions of neural circuitry. Use at least four of the listed resources to address the following questions:
• Theoretically, how is working memory similar to and different from long-term memory?
• How are memories formed in the brain (using neural circuitry), and how are they maintained?
• When is it adaptive to remember, and in what ways may it be adaptive to forget?
• Given what we know about brain mechanisms in memory, are our memories accurate? Explain your answer using information on how memories are stored in the brain.
• How can knowledge of the brain and memory systems be used to help individuals suffering from memory problems (e.g., poor memory, amnesia, PTSD)?
• What role do age and environment play in how memories are formed and maintained?
Theoretically one of the primary ways that working memory is similar to long-term memory is the fact that working memory is also stored within the memory center or area of the brain. In addition, short term memory and long-term memory can both be recalled to the forefront of an individual's consciousness as needed, and both working memory and long-term memory are influenced by the repetition of data or information. Theoretically, what appears to be a major difference between working memory and long-term memory, is the fact that working memory seems to be in a continuous cycle of storage, analysis, and recall, which brings it to the forefront of an individual's consciousness seemingly continuously. This seems to occur more rapidly and continuously, the more that a given memory is utilized in an individual's day-to-day activities, and seems to serve as a means by which the brain can keep important and frequently utilize short-term memories are available for utilization by the executive center of the brain as needed. Another very important difference between working memory and long-term memory is the fact that working memory is often times more clearly defined than long-term memory, which is probably due to the fact that the short-term memory makes stronger visual imprints upon the brain and consciousness due to its more frequent use. In addition, long-term memory would have stronger auditory impressions upon the brain as well, due to the fact that there are usually sounds associated with these memories, and these auditory impressions become stronger and stronger in conjunction with the imagery impressions upon the brain due to the more frequent use of working memory as well.
