The basic concept of Instinct Theory is that human behavior is not based on free (that is, rational) choice, but comes from more primal drives that themselves come from the development of the species. Humans under this theory do not have free will. At least, not in the conventional sense. Instead, primal methods of survival or dominance control how people behave.

Instincts are innate and programmed into human DNA. They are developmental, since they hearken back to times before humanity was civilized. They are not rational. But also, they are not mere reflex. It is an immediate reaction that has a goal in mind: food, control, reproduction, status, etc.
