Motivation Defined:

Motivation may be defined in numerous ways. In general, motivation is a driving force that initiates and directs behavior. Motivation is energy that drives a person to do the things they do or to achieve something they want. Motivation generally does not concern itself with personality. There is achievement motivation, affiliation motivation, competence motivation, power motivation, and attitude motivation. Franken (1994) provides an additional component in his definition: the arousal, direction, and persistence of behavior.

Motivation is based on three specific aspects such as the arousal of behavior, the direction of behavior, and persistence of behavior (Romando, 2007). Romando (2007) goes on to say that arousal of behavior involves what activates human behavior and direction of behavior is concerned with what directs behavior towards a specific goal. Persistence of behavior is concerned with how the behavior is sustained.

There have been many studies to help others understand motivation and the different motives that drive people to be successful. There are three categories of motivation or motives. They are: homeostatic motives, nonhomeostatic motives, and learned or social motives.
