In discussing barriers to treatment, there are several factors to take into account. For example, the barriers that matter are those that are experienced or perceived by the client. These can originate from either the individual or the institutions or system. Also, rarely does a client encounter or experience one barrier or deterrent. They often combine to intensify resistance or lack of access. In general, there are several categories that barriers fall into which are enumerated and briefly explained below. These are utilized by the BTI (Barriers to Treatment Inventory). These factors are also consistent across all studies that ask respondents (clients) about their experiences seeking treatment.

Absence of Problem: Easily understood as those interpersonal issues that avoid the admittance that there is an addition problem, for example "I smoke crack but I function perfectly well personally and socially".
