- It is important to understand the person-centered approach so that you are better equipped to help an individual struggling with any of these issues. I am assuming you are not dealing with a client who is struggling with all these issues at once. The therapist using the person-centered approach does not focus on providing guidance or directives. Instead, he or she provides support, empathy, acceptance, and respect and helps the client feel empowered and capable of finding the solution on his or her own to his or her problem. This approach may work well with depression, anxiety, anger management, and even grief. I would say there are better approaches for helping a client deal with alcohol and substance abuse, eating disorders, and any type of physical, emotional, sexual, and verbal abuse. However, this approach can be used to treat all of these issues to some degree.
