Incidentally, this article was very enlightening and showed that there was that fear or element of persons having normal grief reactions and getting stimatized as having "major depression"; yet, that those in the cohort of severe grief and mjor depression did show parallel symptomatology. It is important to understand that there are that ratio of some bereaved people that are diagnosed and treated as Major Depressive Disorder because their symptoms warrant the cluster of sympmatology for a major depressive episode. A clinician evaluating a bereaved person is at risk for both over-and under-diagnosis, either pathologizing a normal condition or neglecting to treat an impairing disorder.
Moreover, the authors of DSM IV focused primarily on the problem of over-diagnosis, and omitted complicated grief because of insufficient evidence. We revisit bereavement considerations in light of new research findings.
