The monarchy in Canada plays mostly a traditional role. The queen is the constitutional head of state represented by the Governor General of Canada. The Queen is mostly just a figure head and holds very limited power - her signature is required on constitutional documents, but she never denies a signature if the statute has been passed by the Canadian government. The Governor General, the Queen's representative, is appointed by the Queen on recommendation of the Prime Minister. Each province also has a Lieutenant Governor who is also appointed by the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister and parliament hold constitutional power in Canada. The Monarchy is a traditional aspect of Canada that dates back to when Canada was a colony of Britain. And also serves as a reminder that Canada is still part of the Commonwealth. It is important to remember that the Queen is the Queen of Canada as well as the Queen of England. (Most people think she is only England's Queen and has a role in Canada).© BrainMass Inc. brainmass.com December 24, 2021, 4:42 pm ad1c9bdddf>
