The 14th Amendment allows equal protection for all citizens under the law. It refers to all persons "born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside." (Amendment XIV) The amendment requires that no state can create a law that interferes with the rights of any one group or person nor can the state enforce any law that interferes with the rights of any person. Among those included are the right to life, liberty, property, due process of law, and equal protection under the law. The 15th amendment extended this further as included the right to vote in elections if the person is of legal age as set by the federal government.
