Chosen agencies: Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)

I. A brief explanation of the FDA's role and function: The agency is tasked with the responsibility of protecting the public health by direct over site and regulation of several products utilized and/or consumed by both humans and animals (in the case of veterinary drugs). A list of the products they must assure the safety and efficacy of prior to release to the public are:
1. Human and veterinary drugs
2. Biological products
3. Medical devices
4. The nation's food supply
5. Cosmetics
6. Products that emit radiation
7. Tobacco products
8. Dietary supplements
9. Blood transfusions

In addition to that, the FDA also enforces section 361 of the Public Health Service Act and the associated regulations, including sanitation requirements on interstate travel as well as specific rules for control of disease on products ranging from pet turtles to semen donations for assisted reproductive medicine techniques

A brief explanation of the FDA's source of authority: The agency is fully authorized by the United States Government and most the federal laws involving the FDA are all part of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act originally passed in 1938 (which has been extensively amended sine its original draft and passage). Other laws enforced by the FDA are the Public Health Service Act, the Federal Anti-Tampering Act and many parts of the Controlled Substance Act.
