You are a 50-kg mass skater who skates on ice at 4.0 m/s to greet your 40-kg friend, who is standing still, with open arms. As you collide, while holding each other, with what speed to you both move off together?

SOLUTION This solution is FREE courtesy of BrainMass!

The conservation of the total momentum demands that the total momentum before the collision is the same as the total momentum after the collision, and is expressed by the equation
m1V=(m1+m2)V2
V2=m1*V/(m1+m2)=50*4.0/(50+40)=2.22m/s

So the speed of moving off together is 2.22m/s.
