Ethics can be taught and is taught by every family or person in authority. Cultures are founded and maintained on the supposition that ethics can and should be taught. Every culture and civilization teaches its young what things, behaviors and values are non-negotiable. These ethical standards can be based on tradition, religious texts, imposed from the outside through military might, or imported voluntarily from a neighboring civilization.

The Spartans of ancient Greece valued stoicism, bravery, military ability and valor. They made ethical decisions based on these values. The treatment endured by young Spartan boys would be condemned as child abuse or neglect in American society today, however it was revered by the Spartans.
