Approximate percentage appreciation or depreciation

I need to determine the approximate percentage appreciation or depreciation of the NASDAQ Composite, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and the S&P 500 for the last 12 months and for year-to-date and provide these figures.

Here is how you calculate appreciation or depreciation:

1. Find the closing values for the beginning dates (one year ago or at the beginning of 2013) and the end date (market close yesterday, May 8th).

2. Subtract the beginning value from today's. If the number is positive you have price appreciation; if the number is negative, you have depreciation.

3. Divide the difference by the value of the index on the beginning date and multiply by 100 to get a percentage.
