Here is how you calculate appreciation or depreciation:

1. Find the closing values for the beginning dates (one year ago or at the beginning of 2013) and the end date (market close yesterday, May 8th).

2. Subtract the beginning value from today's. If the number is positive you have price appreciation; if the number is negative, you have depreciation.

3. Divide the difference by the value of the index on the beginning date and multiply by 100 to get a percentage.
