Rearranging a quadratic equation

Y = x^2 - 4x - 5
= x^2 - 2*2*x - 5
= ( x^2 - 2*2*x +2^2 ) - 2^2 - 5
= (x-2)^2 - 2^2 - 5
= (x-2)^2 - 4 - 5
= (x-2)^2 -9
y = (x-2)^2 -9
How do I put this in the form y=a(x-H)^2+K, how do I graph this function, and why is it not necessary to plot points to graph when using
y=a(x-h)^2+K?
