Solve by factoring and using the principle of zero products. Remember to check.

30. - 9x + 14 = 0

Solution:

X^2 -9x +14 =0

(x-2)(x-7)= 0

(x-2) =0 (or) (x-7) =0

(x-2) =0 , (x-7)=0

x = 2 , x= 7

Plug in x=2 in the above equation, we get

(2)^2 -9(2) +14 =0
4-18+14=0

18-18 =0

0=0

It satisfies the equation.

Similarly, plug in x= 7 in the above equation, we get

(7)^2 -9(7) +14 =0
49-63+14=0
63-63=0
0=0

It satisfies the equation.

Hence, x= 2 and 7 are the roots of the above quadratic equation.

2
34. x + 16x = 0

Solution:

x^2 +16x= 0

x(x+16) =0
x=0 (or) x+16=0

x= -16

Therefore, the values of x = 0 and -16.

Plug in x=0 in the above equation.

(0)^2 +16(0) =0

0=0

It satisfies the equation.

Plug in x= -16 in the above equation.

(-16)^2 +16(-16) =0

256 - 256 =0

0=0

It satisfies the equation.

Hence, x = 0 and -16 are roots of the above quadratic equation.

2
46. 3x - 7x = 20

Solution:

3x^2 -7x -20 =0

3x^2 -12x+5x-20 =0

3x(x-4) +5(x-4)=0

(3x+5) (x-4)=0

(3x+5) =0 (or) (x-4) =0

3x =-5 , x=4

x= -5/3

Plug in x = -5/3 in the above equation, we get

3(25/9) +35/3 = 20

(25/3) +(35/3) =20

(60/3) ...
