    1. Determine which of the following are linear equations and which are not linear equations. State the reason for your answer.

    (a) x + y = 1000

    (b) 3xy + 2y + 15z - 20 = 0

    (c) 2xy + 4yz = 8

    (d) 2x + 3y 4z = 6.

    An equation is called linear if it is of the form:

    ax+by=c

    where a, b and c are constants.

    So, (a) is a linear equation, while (b), (c) are NOT.

    Note: For (d): 2x + 3y â?" 4z = 6, as I am not sure what â?" stands for, it looks like some symbol, so if it is NOT "-" or "+", then it must be a nonlinear equation.
