Protocol for Death Notifications

A death notification must be made before the media is notified that a death has occurred. For example, suppose there was an automobile accident; the victim was taken to the hospital, and on the way to the hospital, the victim dies. No one in the media is notified about the condition of the victim until a death notification has been made to the immediate family.

Police Departments usually do death notifications. Some have patrolmen assigned to conduct death notices, or Shift Commanders (i.e. Sergeants or lieutenants). Others may have a patrolman accompanied by a member of the clergy assigned to conduct death notices to the immediate family of a decedent. It all depends on the departmental policy.
