No, under representation of women in the bench does not hurt justice because the judges are properly qualified and are trained to make fair and equitable judgments. In fact, if there was a rush to appoint more women judges then in a bid to bring diversity, merit might be compromised and this would lead weakening of the Bench.
Would citizens' views of the fairness of courts improve if more non-traditional persons became judges? Yes, the citizens views of the fairness of the courts would improve if there were more non-traditional persons appointed judges. It is expected that non-traditional persons would bring in more diversity and this would lead to a perception that the judges are more 'just'. Consider the following example, if a rape case is tried by a woman judge, whatever be her decision, it would be perceived to be just and equitable.
