Gang violence refers to criminal and non political acts of violence done by group of person who incessantly do criminal activity against innocent persons. From a different perspective gang violence refers to physical conflicts between two or more gangs. For example, if there is a dispute between two gangs gang violence means a street fight between members of two gangs.
The historical developments of street gangs commenced after the US Revolution War in 1780s. These were street gangs and had little recognition. In early 1800s serious gangs formed. The earliest of these gangs formed in northeastern American cities. After 1820s the gangs began to focus on criminal activities. The Five Points Gang became influential in recruiting membership to gangs and forming relations with politicians. In 1855, there were 30,000 men in gangs in New York City and these led to the New York draft riots. During 1870s and onwards there was a reemergence of gangs. After Civil war the most powerful was the Whyos gang. There were Jewish, Chinese, and Italian gangs. In the late 19th century Chicago gangs became particularly powerful. Gangs influenced Chicago politics. In the late 1920s there were more than 1,300 gangs in Chicago. The American West had a gang growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Gangs reemerged during the Northeast in cities such as New York after the war during 1950s and 1960s with rising Latino immigration and increasing population from South America (a).
