The element "Describe" combines the Art of Command (or the Art of War) and the Science of Control. This second of three steps in the methodology for "Command and Control" describes the commander's visualization (the first step) to subordinates which is key for directing the actions necessary to achieve results (the third step).

This component incorporates time, space, resources, purpose, and action when developing the commander's intent which is ultimately to direct the actions of the subordinates. Describing involves decisive operations, shaping operations, and sustaining operations (4-1).
