The Sung Dynasty ended the chaotic period of the "Five Dynasties" in northern China. It began in 960 with T'ai Tsu. He was a strong general and he managed to reunify China under his control. After his death, however, his successors did not do so well and China weakened. In fact, the land area that the Sung controlled was less than that of the previous T'ang Dynasty. One of their main cultural and political benefits though was to subordinate the military under the control of the civilian government.
