Energy Production

Russia has extensive reserves of natural gas, coal, and petroleum. Coal accounted for most Soviet energy production until the late 1950s, when a gradual shift to oil and gas began. Today Russia is the world's largest producer of natural gas and ranks third in the production of oil. Steam-driven power plants fueled by coal, oil, or natural gas supplied 68 percent of Russia's electricity in 1996. Hydroelectric power plants provided 19 percent, and nuclear power plants supplied 13 percent.
